CHAPTER 13

Harlow Schutte was plucky. Determined. She appeared set on making sure her marriage to my son was planned down to the second in the most exclusive venue in Widow’s Bay.

I sat quietly and listened to options and plans for the wedding day.

I hadn’t been inside Lakeland Country Club since I was a kid.

It was a restricted club. It was the most expensive course in the county.

I had a full day already, ending with the meeting with a wedding planner at Ridge Schutte’s country club. It was a beautiful venue, no question. Yet I felt like a fish out of water here. If women weren’t allowed, I didn’t want to read their policy on witches.

I was half afraid I’d be incinerated upon crossing the threshold. So far, though, it was all systems go as Harlow explained the multiple layers of pomp and circumstances.

Ridge Schutte was on the board here because of course he was.

He and I sat on opposite ends of a banquet table as Harlow described her perfect day.

Aunt Dorothy was also there. While we waited for the best man, my Joe, to arrive, Harlow chatted brightly about the wedding plan that was going to happen with surprisingly short notice.

Ridge Schutte had made it possible for his daughter to get the date she wanted.

This was the first time he and I were in the same room as potential in-laws.

He had a sour expression for me, and for Sam, but he seemed to be holding his tongue for his daughter.

“We’re going to light it with those little white Christmas tree lights. It’s going to be even better than a daytime event. I just know it,” Harlow explained.

Sam had announced, at the onset of the meeting, that Joe was the best man. That, no matter what the plans included, they would include his twin brother, the vampire. And that meant it was going to be an evening wedding and reception.

Harlow, for her part, didn’t miss a beat. She knew her brother in law could fry like a potato chip if they did it in the sunlight.

She knew I was a witch.

And she was just as in love with Sam, as before. I’d had a small hope that maybe she’d dump Sam because of Joe and me. No such luck. She accepted us with open arms. It was sweet, but of course, that meant the wedding planning was going ahead a mile a minute.

The suggestion that the groom’s side would be populated with vampires, shifters, and witches delighted her instead of scared her.

She was open-minded, but her Daddy, as I well knew, was not.

I marveled as she explained to Ridge Schutte that the menu would need to take into account the dietary restrictions along with the sunlight restrictions of the guests.

Ridge stood, arms crossed over his chest. He’d been terse with me. He’d barely acknowledged my son, and as Harlow explained that Joe was a vampire, his suppressed disdain broke free.

“I’m not going to pay for them, I won’t allow it.”

“What?” Harlow’s eyes were wide.
